Someone one once said that if you make Pele,
the goddess of the fire and volcano, angry,
she will rain terror and vengeance on you and
your family. This is a story of an old haole man
who crossed Pele's path. He was walking along the
Mauna Kea ridge one day and saw a perfect lava rock
sitting on a hill. He thought he could use it in his
garden. Not knowing of the goddess Pele, he took the
rock and left, leaving nothing behind except his
lonely footprints. Getting in his car, he began
to feel sick. Believing it was just a cold, the old
man continued his drive down the Mauina Kea
road back to his home in Kona.
As he approached his house, the old man began to sweat.
Not because he was nervous or hot but from a scorching
fever. Upon arriving home, the old man called the
local doctor. Arriving within minutes, the old man
was already unconscious on his bed. The doctor,
seeing the lava rock, knew it had been Pele who
had struck him down. Knowing there would be no
cure for this man, the doctor stayed by him at his
time of death. As the hours passed, the old man grew
sicker and sicker. After several days of fever,
the man died in the hands of Pele.
This story is a tale of Pele's wrath. If you wish to
stay away from her vengeance, it is always a custom
to leave a gift of fruit or a lei
upon the site of lava rock.
