THE BOILING POTS
Pe'epe'e Falls
Wailuku River, Hilo, Hawaii

Location - Wailuku River State Park is
located near downtown Hilo on the
leeward side of Hawaii. It can be accessed
from Waianuenue Avenue with the boiling pots
on Peepee Falls Drive and
Rainbow Falls on Rainbow Drive.

The boiling pots lie down river
from Peepee Falls. They are a succession
of large pools whose water appears to be
boiling as it rolls over many rocks en route
to the ocean. There are well-exposed
hexagonal columns that line the pools
which were formed by the
slow cooling of basalt lava

Mo'o Kuna, the giant monster lizard
who lived high up the Wailuku River
above Rainbow Falls, always
tormented the goddess Hina,
the demi-god Maui's mother,
by sending huge boulders
and logs down the stream.

Legend tells of the final great
battle between the demi-god Maui
and the Mo'o Kuna, in the area
now known as Boiling Pots.

Maui vowed to kill this monster
lizard who tried to drown his mother
Hina by blocking the river below
her cave beneath Rainbow Falls
with a huge boulder,
causing storm waters to rise
into her cave.
